WATER PRESSURE
Low and High Water Pressure Issues
It’s generally expected that anything to an extreme is not a good thing. This applies to water pressure also. There is an optimal level that water pressure should be at.
Low Water Pressure
If the water pressure is too low, the dishwasher may take longer to cycle through, the shower water may not be strong enough, it could take a long time to fill a sink, and on and on. Often, this problem is caused by clogged pipes. However, it may be caused by one of several other issues:
- Water Valve: There are two valves that control the flow of water into your home. If either one of them is not entirely open this could be the cause.
- Defective Fixtures: An old faucet or showerhead can be clogged with rust or dirt. This may be remedied by simply cleaning it; however, the fixture may have to be replaced.
- Plumbing: The pipes themselves may be corroded. This is a common problem, especially in older homes. Also, if additional plumbing fixtures have been installed, the old branch lines may need to be enlarged.
- Leak: This can be the most challenging cause to identify, unless it’s obvious such as a running toilet or a puddle somewhere.
High Water Pressure
High water pressure in excess is on the other end of the spectrum and can also cause problems. If it continues over a long time period, it can cause major issues with the plumbing system as well as cause an increase in water bills. What causes high water pressure? There are several possibilities:
- Thermal expansion: This can be caused by water volume changes occurring when the water heater heats up.
- Water company: They could have the pressure turned up to address the needs of tall buildings or fire hydrants.
- House location: If your home is at the bottom of a hill this could be the cause.
Detecting high water pressure is a little more complicated than detecting low pressure. If you notice noisy pipes, a running toilet, or faucets leaking on a regular basis there may be a problem.
